New Network Product Enables Deaf
Callers NXi Text
Services by NXi Communications June 1, 1998 - - Alexander Graham Bell would have a smile on his face today to learn about a great leap forward in telephone communications for people who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or have certain speech and/or auditory learning disabilities. The new NXi Text Services product for organizations operating LANS/WANS has all but eliminated the need for relay services or TTY's at every desk. NXi Text Services, developed by NXi Communications, is now available from TeleSonic for large organizations, government entities, universities and school systems, hospitals, and any business that wants to get the jump on competition. Callers will be able to initiate a direct conversation via a TTY or a standard computer modem. No touch-tone or Internet capability is required by the callers. And employees within an organization will be able to make direct dial-out calls to a deaf person from the computers sitting on their desks. The core software runs on LAN/WAN network communication servers. Communication with individuals within the organization is achieved by installing client software in each individual PC. The communication server is equipped with special modems that can be called from TTY machines and computer modems on external PCs. Now, a deaf or speech impaired person can call an organization directly using a TTY or computer modem, and then the text call is routed through the organization's LAN/WAN right to the desk top of anyone with a computer on the network. With this system, any call can be transferred to any person on the network best able to help the caller. If the called party is busy or not present, the caller can be sent to an e-mail box, a pager, or transferred to another location.
